“For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.” (1 John 5:3)
Unfortunately, many falsely believe that God is this stiff-necked dictator who’s going to make our life boring and tedious (religious). They couldn’t be more wrong.
As the Apostle John says in this verse, God’s commandments are not burdensome. They actually stem from His great love for us. His commands are all beneficial, and when applied, we truly begin to enjoy and appreciate life.
For instance, He doesn’t command that you can’t drink, but He says drunkenness is sin. How many of us can agree that getting drunk never benefits us? It usually makes us look like fools, do foolish things, and it harms our bodies, hence, the hangover.
He commands us not to have sex outside of marriage. How many hearts are broken, bodies made ill, babies born into broken homes, and marriages ruined, because we don’t obey this command?
See, God’s commands are meant to protect us, not make us miserable. They allow us to enjoy His blessing and favor and to truly not harm ourselves or anyone else.
So next time someone misinterprets the way God works, please lovingly explain to them how His way truly is the best way. He is the One who created all life. He does know what the best way to go about it is, and because He is good and loves us, He teaches us that way in His Word.
I’ve done my way and the world’s way, and it left me broken time and again. Now my life is an amazing adventure, led by the King of the universe, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
