You know the story of the woman who suffered from constant bleeding for twelve years and after just a touch of Jesus’ robe she was healed? Well I was boy-crazy for twelve years, and on February 22nd 2009, I was healed by a touch from Jesus.
I lay on my bed in a pile of sorrow, face covered in tears for I had just literally said goodbye to my ex. We’d spent all day together in Orlando, and he had just walked me to my doorstep. We knew this was it, that God did not want us together.
So there I lay, broken like I’d never been before, and in the midst of that despair, I cried out to Jesus. I told Him if He was there, I really needed Him to speak to me. So I snatched the Bible I’d received when I was eight, but had barely touched and flung it open to anything. Of the 1,027 pages in that Book, my eyes landed on Psalm 20:
“May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble; May the name of the God of Jacob defend you; May He send you help from the sanctuary, And strengthen you out of Zion; May He remember all your offerings, And accept your burnt sacrifice. Selah May He grant you according to your heart’s desire, And fulfill all your purpose. We will rejoice in your salvation, And in the name of our God we will set up our banners! May the Lord fulfill all your petitions. Now I know that the Lord saves His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven With the saving strength of His right hand. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the Lord our God. They have bowed down and fallen; But we have risen and stand upright. Save, Lord ! May the King answer us when we call.”(Psalms 20:1-9 NKJV)
A spark of hope ignited in my cold, dead heart, keeping it alive. I fell asleep with a smile on my face. I woke up and instead of pursuing other men, I pursued Jesus.
I started reading the New Testament book of Matthew and just devoured chapters daily. I was home alone often since I was recently graduated and not in college, having only a part-time job, so I spent lots of hours reading the Bible, praying and listening to Christian music.
Everyday I’d cry less and less for my ex until finally, by merely the sixth day, I wasn’t crying anymore, but instead, smiling!
I had this immense joy and was finally completely content in being without a boyfriend. Jesus was enough.
And here I am, four-and-a-half years later, and Jesus is still enough.
One would think the first thing I do in the morning is look at my handsome husband and kiss him.
First thing I do is begin praying. Then I get out of bed as my husband continues to snooze, and I get into the Word. Then I sing at the top of my lungs in the living room to Jesus and then I intercede. THEN my hubby wakes up and I spend time with him.
So what am I getting at? Be content with Jesus before you look to anyone or anything else to bring you happiness. It ain’t gonna work.
If there’s something in the way of you getting closer to Jesus, whatever it is, drop it and follow Him. And drop it immediately, as these guys did:
“And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” They immediately left their nets and followed Him.” (Mark 1:16-18)
“Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.” (Matthew 16:24-27)
