I really want to tackle this passage:
Who can find a capable wife? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will not lack anything good. She rewards him with good, not evil, all the days of her life. She selects wool and flax and works with willing hands. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from far away. She rises while it is still night and provides food for her household and portions for her female servants. She evaluates a field and buys it; she plants a vineyard with her earnings. She draws on her strength and reveals that her arms are strong. She sees that her profits are good, and her lamp never goes out at night. She extends her hands to the spinning staff, and her hands hold the spindle. Her hands reach out to the poor, and she extends her hands to the needy. She is not afraid for her household when it snows, for all in her household are doubly clothed. She makes her own bed coverings; her clothing is fine linen and purple. Her husband is known at the city gates, where he sits among the elders of the land. She makes and sells linen garments; she delivers belts to the merchants. Strength and honor are her clothing, and she can laugh at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom and loving instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the activities of her household and is never idle. Her sons rise up and call her blessed. Her husband also praises her: “Many women are capable, but you surpass them all! ” Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised. Give her the reward of her labor, and let her works praise her at the city gates.-Proverbs 31:10-31
Talk about a mandate for women! The Proverbs 31 Woman is a beautiful role-model all Christian wives should imitate. Though these verses are engraved on my wedding band, I’ve never broke this passage down and genuinely studied it. So, I plan to do so now on this blog the upcoming weeks, verse by verse, or however the Holy Spirit leads. Ready, sisters? Let’s jump right in!
Who can find a capable wife? She is far more precious than jewels. (Proverbs 31:10)
Let’s see what that word “capable” looks like in the original Hebrew.
Chayil: strength, might, efficiency, wealth, army strength, ability, force
So really, this verse is speaking about a powerful woman. Powerful, godly women are surely rare. A woman can train herself to be physically strong, or gain power by manipulation or other ungodly means, but a woman who is powerful in Christ is a rarity indeed. A woman who draws strength from the Lord her God, not from others, or herself e.g. her looks or intellect, is very precious.
If her husband acts out, she doesn’t act out with him, but draws strength from her God and practices self-control.
When the devil sends demons to try and destroy her marriage, with army strength she prays against those evil forces and resists Satan who then must flee from her.
A woman who is able to perform her wifely tasks; raising her children in godliness, taking care of the home, providing sustenance for her family, and who does this with her best foot forward, utilizing her time wisely, is very special.
This verse alone encompasses all of the above. A woman of chayil is a woman of godly power.
Are you a powerful Christian woman? The good news is you can be. But it takes faith and obedience to God the Father. Sin must be left behind, and righteousness must be pursued.
You need to stop complaining, nagging, yelling, arguing, envying, belittling, gossiping, or whatever you’re doing that is ungodly, and begin delving into God’s Word and letting Him renew your mind.
When you read about submitting to your husband, you obey. When you read about winning over a disobedient husband by your respectful and godly behavior without a word, you heed that command. You do not justify your bitterness, your anger, your unforgiveness, but any sin whatsoever you forsake and die to, that you may live for God. Then, Christ’s power will work mightily in you, and you will surely become a capable wife.
Proverbs 31 Woman Prayer
Father, in Jesus’ name I thank You for Your precious Word, and I ask that You would please help me hate and forsake any sins in my life, and obey Your commands that I may become a powerful daughter of yours and a capable wife. Amen.
